Celebrating what makes our community unique

We're excited to show you this special exhibit, which celebrates the richness in culture, history, language, and more that gives our community such vibrancy. We hope to provide a space for current community members to reflect on this moment in time: to celebrate what we love about Caltech and reflect on what we need to improve upon to make our campus feel welcoming to everyone.

He's Basque-Taiwanese, raised in America. A few generations ago, our respective cultures would not even be aware of the other's existence, but through the Caltech community, we were able to find each other. ''Afrofuturist University'' by Cecilia Sanders ''Khipu Unknotted'' by Olivia Pardo: A khipu (Quechua word for ''knot'') is a knotted textile device used for extensive record-keeping across the Inka Empire. The knots hold numerical significance, but may have also been used to record stories and more - this knowledge was erased after colonization by the Spanish, who believed written language superior. In this khipu I knot two numbers: nine (left) and six (right), which I associate with my abuelito and abuelita. As its blossom is typically in the fall, it is often associated with gathering and harvesting.
